Utopia is a fallacy. In a perfect world our slate of choices would be reduced to one. There is no reason for optionality, for personal selection, for freedom of thought and expression — there is only the perfect offering. Impossible to achieve and we don't desire the result.

We learn from the trailblazers that have gone before us. While we appreciate these lessons, we must be cautious that we don't become so enamored with their results that we unconsciously adopt their process too.

Creativity, the generation of ideas, is not synonymous with innovation, the implementation of an idea. The secret to innovation is in the implementation of an idea, in its execution.

Aspirations expand our horizon, expectations cap our ceiling. Aspirations are about striving to achieve more, expectations are only good enough. Aspirations lift us up, expectations hold us back. Aspirations allow for new possibilities, expectations are predetermined outcomes.

Technology is driving us toward stale perfection. While we should use tools that make the job of developing software easier, let's not outsource the creative elements.

In our work a straight course is often desired, yet circumstances may require us to take a more indirect route to reach our goal. Tacking doesn't change the end goal, it adjusts our course to get there.

When the threshold of upkeep, costs, and risk are no longer justified we begin tagging the apparatus as legacy. To avoid being overwhelmed by technical debt, we set an expiration date for the technology choices we are making today.
